April 28 – Barcelona with Lauren and Deme

Unfortunately, Barcelona was chilly and rainy so we bundled up, grabbed our umbrellas and started our exploration of Barcelona.

Of course we needed to see some Gaudi locations so we started with Casa Batallo. Crazy! We then headed down to the port to look around and then started walking up La Rambla.

We found a great lunch place where they have cold tapas on their counter for you to pick at your pleasure and then they had servers walking around with hot tapas. It was interesting – each tapas had either a small spoon or a toothpick in it. So when we were done they counted our spoons and toothpicks and knew how much to charge us!

Then to the Gaudi spectacular – the Guell. Amazing that someone could design all of it!

By then it was time to get Lauren back to the hotel to leave and although Deme were cold and tired we needed to go see Sagrada Familia.

Evening was upon us and Deme and I were about to start another adventure – an overnight train to Granada! So much fun….

Deme had booked us our own sleeper room which included a sink to wash up, etc. Not a ton of space but plenty for our things and to sleep. Once we boarded we headed to the bar/snack area, had a glass of wine and then off to sleep!

April 26 – Our last day in Santorini – very sad…

After dropping some items in Fira to ship back home we go to the museum where there are pieces found in Akrotiri.

A nice lunch overlooking the volcano and then I’m off to the cable car! Fira is where the cruise ships come in. So the way up to the town of Fira is by cable car. I take the cable car down, have a ouzo by the water and then take it back up. Great pictures of the water and town!

Deme and I decide to have a little dinner before flying back to Athens. Of course we had more fritters, greek salad and then some delicious chicken souvlaki.

Goodbye Santorini!

Thursday April 25 – Santorini

We head down the mountain to a wonderful little bay called Amoudi. Picturesque!

Wonderful lunch of tomato salad, tomato fritters (by the way a Santorini speciality), cheese and fresh bream grilled on an outdoor grill. We finish off we baklava.

This evening we finally catch the sunset. It is amazing! And what was even better – it was a full moon. We all were looking in one direction and didn’t even realize the moon was just as spectacular!

For our late dinner we went to a small souvlaki place where the locals eat.

Wednesday April 24 – Santorini

Spectacular view and delicious breakfast at the hotel.

We head off to Akrotiri to see the ruins. After seeing the exhibit we walk down a road and up a path to see the red beach. By then we are getting hungry and find an amazing road-side restaurant. Probably the most memorable meal of the trip! Homemade wine, fresh tomato fritters, beets and wonderful assorted dips.

On our way back to Oia we stop in Fira for some shopping and exploring.

Dinner was so good the prior night we go back to the same restaurant. We have the same wonderful waiter again! We have the same apps but this time I have what they called a baked veal dish. The description doesn’t do it justice! It an amazing piece of beef in a delicious tomato sauce with cinnamon and allspice. The pasta on the side is similar to pastistio but without any meat. Yum, Yum!

April 23 – Arrive Santorini!

We leave Athens and arrive in Santorini’s small/quant airport. Wow – not sure what I expected but it is even better!

Our hotel on Oia is great – we each have our own rooms and the view is amazing. The one challenge….we have to climb down about 30 crazy, rocky steps to get to the hotel.

Lunch is a beautiful salad and (probably the best ever) spanakopita.

We stroll around Oia shopping for the rest of the day. Unfortunately, no sunset but we have fantastic pita and ouzo at a restaurant as a early evening snack.

Fantastic dinner! Wrapped shrimp, chilled octopus salad and spicy pasta – yum!

Day 2 Athens

Wonderful day!

Shopping, eating traditional Greek food (the beef and orzo reminded me of something my Mom made) walking all around Plaka and downtown and seeing the Parliament building with it’s guards.

Thanks Julia and Deme for another fantastic day!

Yesterday in Athens!

What a wonderful day in Athens!

My cousin Deme and I started our day with a wonderful breakfast in our hotel.

On our walk to the Acropolis I enjoyed my favorite Greek drink – an espresso freddo (I have been thinking about them since the last time Rich and I were here!)

Then the Acropolis – what more can I say…….

We spent the afternoon eating and shopping in Plaka.

My friend Julia joined Deme and I in the evening to take us to a beach restaurant for a drink to watch the sunset. What a fabulous view and it was so great to catch up with Julia. Then we were off to my favorite souvlaki restaurant for an amazing meal.

Just an incredible day!
