I had an Under the Tuscan Sun Moment!
If you have ever seen the movie Under the Tuscan Sun – Diane Lane’s character waves at a gentleman throughout the movie and at the end he finally waves back.
My Mandarin school in in this little neighborhood that is mainly residential. Everyday (unless it’s raining) a man sits at the entrance to the lane and acts like a neighborhood watch person. So for the last couple of weeks he wasn’t sure what to make of me.
Until today!
Today I received a very friendly NiHao (hello in Mandarin)! I must be growing on him!!
My journey to Mandarin everyday….
For me to get to class I need to walk about 10 minutes to get to the Metro, ride it for about 10 minutes and then finish up with a 15 minute walk.
The walk from the hotel to and from the Metro includes a walk through a lovely park. It is considered an art park and has sculptures in addition to ponds, water features and flowers. There are also some animals including 3 black swans, a family of ducks and some random cats.
So in such a large, crazy big city I am very fortunate that this is part of my day!
The Shanghai Aquarium
Wednesday I decided to go to the Aquarium after class and enjoy some sea life!
The aquarium is quite nice but it was extremely busy. Because Chinese children are out if school (just like the US) it was packed full of people. Also, the Chinese culture tends to be a bit more pushy so it was hard to see some of the exhibits.
Still a nice time – but if I went again it would be when kids are in school!
Lazy Monday!
So I didn’t have class on Monday and had high expectations to go do something touristy…..maybe a museum, maybe one of the gardens?
So it ended up being one of those Lazy Shanghai Days!
I’m not sure if it’s the fact that I’ve been busy studying or I was on China overload – but I did nothing….
….except get a pedicure!
And an inexpensive one at that. Only $17 US dollars. This is much less than I paid last year (and P.S. he wouldn’t accept a tip).
Fun Sunday…
Rich and I headed out to find a few more places I follow on Instagram.
This time we found a fun coffee place (@sumeriancoffee) and a little restaurant (@dogtownshanghai) that sells great Mexican inspired dishes.
We also wandered around exploring.
Another great neighborhood!
