Amazing Tempura!

A colleague of Rich’s recommended this tempura place near our hotel.

Delish! Shrimp, fish, vegetables, a shrimp fritter, rice and miso soup!

A must see in Tokyo Station:

DISNEY!!!

I entered the Huaihai Lu UNIQLO store in Shanghai on Tuesday and was in my happy place! The store has dedicated a major portion of their 4 level building to Dismey displays and product. I was a little overwhelmed!

They even are selling cool patches so you can customize your own clothes.

Many thanks to my Pilates teacher Karin who told me the whole thing existed!

Cooking class with Payal!

I met Payal 3 years ago and have attended her cooking classes before – you all may remember!

I was so excited to attend her class on kebabs. I always thought of kebabs as different meats on a stick. But It turns out it means anything grilled/cooked.

She prepared today:

  1. Hummus with sesame seeds
  2. Reshmi chicken kebabs
  3. Falsfel
  4. Homemade pita pockets

All so delicious!

Thanks Payal!

CaoSuGong Ink Factory Tour

Today I took part in a tour of a very old Shanghai ink factory. I honestly had no idea what to expect but it was really interesting!

This type of ink is used for calligraphy and it actually is in a block format and the artist would then grind it and add water to use it.

It is made with soot, ting oil, lard and sesame oil.

The steps are:

  1. Collect the soot
  2. Mix the ingredients
  3. Beat the mixture with a hammer until it soft (similar to clay)
  4. Break down the clay like mixture into smaller pieces
  5. Place in casts to create different shapes and designs
  6. Trim the pieces
  7. Air dry the pieces in a cool environment, turning them everyday for 8-10 months
  8. Add ink to the pattern to provide color and design
  9. Package the finished ink

Fascinating!
