I honestly had no idea what to expect but it was really interesting!<\/p>\n<p>This type of ink is used for calligraphy and it actually is in a block format and the artist would then grind it and add water to use it.<\/p>\n<p>It is made with soot, ting oil, lard and sesame oil.<\/p>\n<p>The steps are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Collect the soot<\/li>\n<li>Mix the ingredients&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Beat the mixture with a hammer until it soft (similar to clay)<\/li>\n<li>Break down the clay like mixture into smaller pieces<\/li>\n<li>Place in casts to create different shapes and designs<\/li>\n<li>Trim the pieces<\/li>\n<li>Air dry the pieces in a cool environment, turning them everyday for 8-10 months<\/li>\n<li>Add ink to the pattern to provide color and design<\/li>\n<li>Package the finished ink<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Fascinating!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/livefoodtravel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_5536.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/livefoodtravel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_5536.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/livefoodtravel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_5559.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/livefoodtravel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_5559.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/livefoodtravel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_5564.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/livefoodtravel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_5564.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today I took part in a tour of a very old Shanghai ink factory.
